1. Acceptance of Terms

By accessing or using BioQuery™ ("the Service"), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree to these terms, do not use the Service.

2. Description of Service

BioQuery™ is a research tool that enables natural language queries against public cancer genomics databases (including TCGA and GTEx). The Service generates Query Cards containing statistical analyses, visualizations, and methods text.

3. Acceptable Use

You agree to use the Service only for:

  • Legitimate research and educational purposes
  • Non-commercial use (unless you have a paid subscription)
  • Purposes consistent with applicable laws and regulations

You agree NOT to:

  • Use automated tools to scrape or access the Service beyond API rate limits
  • Redistribute bulk data obtained through the Service
  • Attempt to reverse engineer or circumvent security measures
  • Use the Service to make clinical decisions for patient care
  • Misrepresent the source or accuracy of results

4. Research Use Only

IMPORTANT: BioQuery™ is intended for research purposes only. Results should not be used for clinical decision-making, patient diagnosis, or treatment selection. Always consult qualified healthcare professionals for medical decisions.

5. Data Sources

BioQuery™ queries public datasets including:

  • TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas): Publicly available under NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy
  • GTEx (Genotype-Tissue Expression): Publicly available under dbGaP authorization

Users are responsible for citing original data sources in any publications. See our documentation for proper citation formats.

6. Query Cards and Output Licensing

Query Cards generated through the Service are licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 (CC-BY). This means you may:

  • Share and redistribute Query Cards in any medium or format
  • Adapt, transform, and build upon the material
  • Use Query Cards for commercial purposes

Attribution requirement: You must give appropriate credit to BioQuery™, provide a link to the Query Card, and indicate if changes were made. Suggested citation:

"Generated using BioQuery™ (www.bioquery.io)"

7. Intellectual Property

The BioQuery™ name, logo, software, and documentation are owned by BioQuery and protected by copyright and trademark law. The Service's underlying code, algorithms, and methods are proprietary.

You retain ownership of your query history and any custom analyses you develop using our API.

8. Account Responsibilities

You are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your account credentials and for all activities that occur under your account. Notify us immediately of any unauthorized use.

9. Rate Limits and Fair Use

We reserve the right to throttle or suspend accounts that abuse rate limits or degrade service for other users.

10. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND. WE DO NOT GUARANTEE:

  • The accuracy, completeness, or reliability of any results
  • That statistical analyses are appropriate for your specific use case
  • Uninterrupted or error-free operation
  • That the Service will meet your specific requirements

11. Limitation of Liability

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, BIOQUERY SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR RESEARCH OUTCOMES.

12. Indemnification

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless BioQuery from any claims, damages, or expenses arising from your use of the Service or violation of these Terms.

13. Modifications

We may modify these Terms at any time. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance. We will notify registered users of material changes via email.

14. Termination

We may suspend or terminate your access to the Service at any time for violation of these Terms or for any other reason at our discretion.

15. Governing Law

These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict of law principles.
